Springboard Collaborative’s impactful work in the Bay Area region helps thousands of children, like first-grade student Maria, every year.

Maria started the 2021 school year knowing only some of her letters and sounds. She was very shy and struggling academically. Everything came together for her after participating in Springboard’s after-school program. In ten weeks, Maria passed nine reading levels. She went from reading at the beginner kindergarten level to reading at the level of a rising second grader—astonishing growth for such a short period of time!

Maria’s mother also noticed a change in her daughter. Where she was hesitant to read before, Maria suddenly started volunteering to read together at home. When she came to words that she wasn’t familiar with, instead of stopping, she would try to sound them out or figure out the word in the context of the sentence or story. Now when they’re having dinner or driving somewhere, she excitedly reads from the restaurant menu or reads billboards along the highway.
