Our First Four Investments: A Story of Trust, Partnership, and Growth

Jul 1, 2026

Greater Newark

Four years ago, GreenLight Fund Greater Newark began with a simple but important commitment: listen first.

We listened to residents, nonprofit leaders, educators, civic partners, young people, families, and community members across Newark. Those conversations shaped everything that followed. They helped us understand where the greatest gaps existed, and where proven solutions could meaningfully strengthen what was already here.

From that foundation, we began selecting and supporting organizations working to respond to priorities identified by the community—efforts that, together, reflect a shared focus on opportunity, stability, and access.

In the years since, that work has taken shape through partners like Newark EMS Corps, opening pathways for young adults into emergency response and healthcare careers; Reading Partners, expanding individualized literacy support for students across the city; Food Connect, strengthening the systems that move food and resources more quickly to families and community partners; and Housing Connector, working to expand access to stable housing by deepening relationships between property owners, housing providers, and local organizations and connecting them to residents.

Each of these organizations arrived in Newark with a proven model, but what has shaped their impact here is not only the model itself—it is trust. Trust built through relationships with residents, with partners on the ground, and with the Selection Advisory Council, investors, city leaders, and community members who have helped guide, challenge, and strengthen this work. Their engagement has ensured that each organization continues to adapt with humility and remain grounded in the needs of the community.

We are incredibly proud of what has been built together. Bringing new organizations and new approaches into a city with deep history, strong relationships, and real needs is not a simple process. It requires patience, openness, and a willingness to listen again and again. To the many people who opened doors, asked hard questions, offered honest feedback, and stayed engaged in shaping what this work could become– thank you.

Even as we reflect on what has been built, it is clear that this is still an early chapter. The impact of these first four investments is already visible—in young people beginning careers, students building stronger literacy skills, families gaining more reliable access to food, and residents finding greater housing stability—but the full impact is still unfolding. What we have seen so far is not the conclusion of this work. It is the beginning of what is possible when community voice, proven models, and sustained partnership come together.

As GreenLight Fund Greater Newark moves into its next phase, the focus is on deepening and expanding those connections. That means strengthening the relationships between residents and our portfolio organizations through ongoing engagement, continuing to surface and elevate resources across Newark, and preparing for the next round of investments that will build on what we have learned.

The thread running through all of it remains the same: this work is built in partnership, and it only moves as far as trust allows.

What has been rooted in Newark is ready to grow.

We are grateful for everyone who has been part of these first four years, and we look forward to those who will join us in what comes next.
