Growing Confidence: Friends of the Children

Chris, a spirited first grader, joined Friends of the Children–Boston this year and has already made a strong impression. With the support of his Friend, Mike, he has made meaningful progress in the classroom and in how he shows up for others.

At the beginning of the school year, Chris struggled to keep up with homework and often forgot assignments at home. Now, he turns his work in on time, practices vocabulary with his parents before school, and regularly chooses to spend extra time reading. His teachers have taken notice and frequently praise his growth.

Chris is also learning to recognize and communicate what he needs to succeed. Mike gives him space to make choices, take risks, and learn from mistakes. As Mike explains, “He knows that I care more about him giving his all than being perfect.”

That encouragement has helped Chris set ambitious goals of his own, from learning a bicycle kick to eating more fruit. He is also known for greeting people with hugs and high fives.

Chris’s kindness stands out just as much as his determination. When he recently heard someone make a teasing comment, he quickly spoke up and asked them to apologize. It was a small moment that showed his confidence, empathy, and strong sense of what is right.

Someday, Chris hopes to become a police officer so he can protect and serve others. For now, he is already building the qualities that will help him get there.
