Building Confidence: ParentChild+

Through ParentChild+, Marina grew from quietly observing to confidently advocating for her nonverbal daughter Maya, who has now started preschool with an IEP on the way.

Marina and her daughter, Maya joined the ParentChild+ program in May 2024. Maya is nonverbal and relies mostly on body language to communicate. After connecting with their home visitor Janelle, Marina opened up about the emotional challenges her family was facing as they struggled to accept that Maya might have a disability.

As the program unfolded, Marina slowly gained strength and confidence in advocating for her daughter. Janelle adapted the program to meet Maya’s needs, always keeping inclusion at the center. Janelle supported Marina in expanding Maya’s ASL communication through songs, modeling, and intentional interaction. Over time, we saw a powerful shift. Marina went from quietly observing during visits to confidently leading them with little support. In early November, Marina proudly completed the ParentChild+ program. Maya has since begun preschool and will soon have her IEP in place.
