Paul Carttar

Paul Carttar is an independent consultant who brings more than forty years of experience across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to his work, which in recent years has focused primarily on advancing social innovation in Africa. He is also a senior advisor to and co-founder of The Bridgespan Group.

During the Obama Administration, he served as the initial Director of the Social Innovation Fund (SIF), which mobilized more than a billion public and private dollars to grow promising nonprofits with evidence of impact in low-income communities. Prior to the SIF, Carttar was an executive partner with New Profit, Inc., working with entrepreneurial nonprofit CEO’s to build strong organizations and expand their scale and impact. Previously, he was chief program officer for the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. His business career included several years at Bain & Company, the international corporate consulting firm, and executive positions with two private, early-stage companies in the healthcare industry.

Carttar has been a featured speaker on topics relating to social innovation and investment at conferences in the US and around the world, including the UK, Germany, Ireland, Russia, Denmark, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Singapore, China, Malaysia, South Korea, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Thailand and India.

Carttar graduated with highest distinction from the University of Kansas and received his MBA from Stanford University.
