New Teacher Center

New Teacher Center (NTC) is committed to disrupting the educational inequities for systemically underserved students to ensure every student receives an excellent and equitable education that empowers them to reach their full potential in classrooms, communities, and beyond.

The Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) strategic plan, Blueprint 2020, identified Exceptional Talent as a priority which recognizes that support for Detroit’s teachers, especially new teachers, is critical to achieve positive impact on student outcomes and teacher retention.

NTC developed a tailored program aligned to DPSCD’s Vision for Excellent Instruction to build capacity to support new teachers through the development of Teacher Mentors. This professional induction model provides school-based mentors with job-embedded, evidence-based support, rooted in academic and social and emotional learning competencies. The veteran, peer Teacher Mentors learn to deliver instructionally-focused, 1:1 support and actionable feedback to new teachers through observation, analysis of student work, and comprehensive data to accelerate educator leadership, teaching practice, and student learning.

With over 20 years of expertise working with districts across the county, NTC has found that when educators have high-quality instructional materials and implementation support, students learn more. Rigorous third-party studies have shown that students of NTC-supported new teachers in grades 4 through 8 demonstrated up to 5 months of additional learning in math and English in one school year.

“GreenLight Fund tackled our critical priority of Exceptional Talent that includes recruiting, retaining, and investing in talent development. This is a perfect example of a partner asking the District what the need is and going to work on our behalf to support and fund the work in alignment with our strategic plan.”
