Of all the things that Diane McManus might have expected when she went back to school at Bunker Hill Community College, experiencing a moment of almost divine intervention was not among them. But in her own words: “I found my angel in the hallways at BHCC”. The timing could not have been better.

Diane moved to Boston from South Carolina in 1982, a 20 year old single mother escaping an abusive relationship and hoping to find refuge with her mother. She wasn’t exactly greeted with open arms. Living conditions were rough. But Diane was a fighter with dreams. So she went back to school – or tried to. Her mother was no help – not a big surprise since she had abandoned Diane at a young age. Without child care in place, Diane found it almost impossible to make it to class.
